27A Reading Reflection No.3

How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, By Scott Adams

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?

The major themes I gathered from this book are self-motivation and determination and ‘deciding vs wanting.’

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

This book was all about self-pursuing and self-determination. I learned that failure is normal and was created to shape developing minds and paths.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?

If I were to create an activity based off this book, I would make students create post about what makes a person successful in their opinion and why are these characteristics important. I would also ask students to describe their path during this semester and how it has shaped them in their path to success.

4) What was your biggest surprise or ‘aha’ moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

I learned that it is okay to be selfish when building your career. I often worry about the opinions of everyone else around me besides my own. I find myself stressing out more trying to make everyone else happy and not myself. This book changed my view on how one can be happy and successful. I love how the author touched on maximizing personal energy, identifying my talents and exploiting them, and that passion is bullshit and it is all about hard work and determination.

  1. Hi Remi, it really seems like this book taught you about a lot of different ways to be happy and successful, because happiness and success can mean different things to different people. I really like what you wrote about failure; it reminds me of the other assignment due this week, and lessons I have learned that have taught me that failure is a necessary evil that just makes your stronger if you learn from it.
