21A Reading Reflection No.2

The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users, Guy Kawasaki

The general theme of this book is tips and tricks to generate a positive and professional social media presence in the business world. I believe that this book did connect and enhance with the information learned in ENT 3003. Networking through social media and developing your image is a massive factor in creating a successful business concept, product, service, or image. This book explains the ways businesses manipulate their audiences by only showing them what the business wants their audience to see. Most companies look at potential applicants’ social media to see how serious or professional they come off to be. From personal experience, my dad would tell me about the crazy Facebook profiles some of his applicants would have and that it played a big part in being hired. If I were to create an exercise for this book, it would be “what social media sites are best used for business connections? Do you think your social media accounts are considered “professional?” How so? What constitutes a social media profile as “suitable” when thinking about a company researching their applicants?” What I learned that differed most from my expectations was the fact that you can still be yourself. Your social media is how you can express yourself. Just because you have an opinion about something, doesn’t mean you can’t post about it, in moderation to what you want potential businesses/companies to see. The biggest thing I took away from this was that my social media is my “personal brand” no one is exactly like me. There is only one of me.

  1. Thank you for the insight, I was considering reading this book for the next reading reflection! My friend from high school actually currently works with Guy Kawasaki. Everything you wrote really reflects the things she has told me about working with him and about his philosophy.
